Northwest Technical College’s Dental Assisting program partnered with dentists from Bemidji and the surrounding area to provide free dental care for more than 110 children at its annual Give Kids a Smile event, Feb. 5. More than a half-dozen dentists, along with dental assistants, hygienists and a dental therapist provided their services during the day. NTC students joined these working professionals to get live clinical experience working with children. The group provided exams, fluoride treatments, sealants, x-rays and measures to preserve dental health and prevent the spread of disease. Everyone working at this event volunteered his or her time to participate. Students in NTC’s child care programs also helped by providing activities and care services for young families while children attended their dental appointments.
NTC partnered with the Beltrami and Cass county Bi-County Community Action Program and other organizations to provide Give Kids a Smile. The event was also supported by a $500 grant from the Minnesota Dental Foundation and by supply donations from Henry Schein, a global provider of medical and dental supplies.
