The Graduating Nurses of Northwest Technical College’s Associate Degree and Practical Nursing Programs Announce Their 2024 Pinning Ceremony.
The pinning ceremony is a nursing school tradition. It is a symbolic welcoming of soon-to-be nurses into the nursing profession. The celebration represents a personal and professional achievement for every graduate.
The ceremony can be traced back to the Crusades of the 12th century. During this time, monks tended to injured and ill soldiers. Badges were given in symbolic ceremony to the monks who dedicated their lives to caring for the sick and injured.
For nursing, the badge became the nursing pin. Many credit Florence Nightingale for the nursing pin as a recognition of the diligent training and work done by her nursing students.
Known as the Lady with the Lamp, as she made patient rounds during the night, Florence Nightingale organized the care for wounded soldiers in the Crimean War in the mid-1850s. Florence and her 38 volunteer nurses cared for hundreds of soldiers. With her efforts, she brought public health to national attention.
In the 1860s, in London, she established the first school of nursing and was instrumental in changing how nursing care was practiced. Florence revolutionized the nursing profession.
To share the honor of becoming a nurse, she presented a medal of excellence to her brightest graduates. By 1916, the practice of pinning new nursing graduates became standard throughout the U.S.
Each school has its own, individually designed pin. The pin includes the name of the school and the designation earned – PN or RN and is worn with pride.
