Beauty Training Returns to North Woods: NTC Cosmetology Academy Opens in August

For students seeking training in the beauty industry, professional, affordable and accessible cosmetology training returns to the North Woods this fall. The Northwest Technical College Cosmetology Academy will open its doors to students beginning in August, and provide prospective beauty industry professionals with the training they need to secure in-demand salon jobs that fill a need in many communities or to open their own salons.

There’s never been a better time to consider a career in the beauty industry. Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development is projecting a 17% increase in employment opportunities for hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists by 2030, with larger increases projected for skin-care specialists. In addition, cosmetology offers a rare opportunity to combine artistic expression with technical skills, to interact with people from all walks of life and to help people feel good about their appearances.

The NTC Cosmetology Academy makes its home in the former location of Bemidji’s Professional Salon Academy, at 519 Anne Street. Wendy Brown, long-time owner of the Professional Salon Academy, leads the NTC Cosmetology Academy faculty. This history and experience ensures that NTC Cosmetology Academy students will get the most up-to-date and innovative teaching in the industry.

Information Night

An open information night for anyone interested in the NTC Cosmetology Academy is set for Wednesday, July 24, from 6–7 p.m. at Northwest Technical College’s main campus, located at 905 Grant Ave SE in Bemidji. Attendees will be able to meet with NTC faculty and meet with representatives from various student support services at the college.

Program Detail

The NTC Cosmetology Academy offers a diploma in Cosmetology beginning in August 2024, which will include training in nail-care technology, esthetics and advanced practice esthetics. For students seeking to specialize or to start with a shorter program, NTC will begin offering standalone certificate programs in nail-care technology or esthetics in Spring 2025. Credits earned with those certificates can be applied directly to the full cosmetology diploma in the future.

Academy faculty guide students through hands-on work beginning on day one of the program. Graduates will learn how to offer in-demand services in the personal care industry, including but not limited to haircuts, color and highlights, permanent waves, facials, makeup application, face and body waxing and manicures, pedicures and artificial nail enhancements.

The program is flexible and will allow students to start taking classes in either the fall or spring terms, depending on what fits their schedules.

Prospective students can take advantage of a variety of financial aid options available at Northwest Technical College, including the North Star Scholars Program — which allows qualifying students to attend with no charges for tuition or fees. Contact the NTC Office of Admissions for details.

Graduates will be prepared for professional licensing through the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology. This license ensures that practitioners, salon owners and schools uphold high standards and clean, safe environments for their clients. Licensing also ensures customers that they are receiving services from a trained professional.
