From Factory Floor to Remote Coder: Mike Patterson Found Success at NTC

Mike Patterson spent years working the third shift as an industrial chrome plater, but a desire for more family time and a mentally challenging career led him down a new path.

The Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, resident wanted a job that offered flexibility, involved problem solving and allowed him to spend more time with his family. He found it through an online search that led him to Northwest Technical College’s fully online Medical Coding Certificate program.

“I was looking for a medical coding program that I could complete remotely and not have to be put on a wait list,” Patterson said.

Patterson graduated in spring 2024 with academic honors, successfully balancing full-time work with his studies. With no prior experience in the medical field, he adjusted his schedule to meet the demands of coursework.

“I was working full time, and I had to rearrange my work schedule to give me time to do my school work,” he said. “I had no history in medical studies.”

Motivated by a goal to work remotely and complete a program quickly, Patterson finished the certificate in just two semesters.

After passing his Certified Professional Coder exam, he was hired by Sanford Health as a remote physician services medical coder. He will mark one year with the company in August 2025.

“I like the people I work with,” he said. “I especially like having a flex schedule and working from home.”

The shift to remote work has opened up new opportunities. Patterson now coaches youth baseball and enjoys more quality time with his family — things he couldn’t do while working nights in a factory.

He recently returned to NTC to speak with current medical coding students, sharing his journey and offering practical advice.

“Make sure you have the ability to sit in front of a computer for long periods of time,” he said. “Take the time to go through a program that gives you the best options for medical coding. Make sure you enjoy problem solving and researching.”

Students interested in a similar path can choose from several options at NTC, including the Medical Coding Certificate, Medical Coding Diploma and Associate of Applied Science in Medical Coding.

In a field traditionally dominated by women, Patterson brings a unique perspective and serves as a source of inspiration for others considering a similar career.

Now thriving in his new role and lifestyle, Patterson’s journey is a story of perseverance, adaptability and finding the right fit through education.
